Stillwater Range Mining District Road
Silver boom ruins in remote Stillwater canyons
This mining district road penetrates deep into the Stillwater Range, accessing the remnants of a once-thriving silver district that produced millions in ore during the 1860s. The route follows Stillwater Canyon through progressively narrower gorges, passing stone foundations, collapsed shafts, and rusted machinery from operations like the Wonder Mine and Fairview Mill. The road ends at the head of the canyon where stamp mills once thundered, now silent ruins perched on steep talus slopes.
Difficult rating earned through rocky technical sections, loose shale climbs, and several spots requiring precise wheel placement around cliff edges. High-clearance 4WD mandatory, with rock sliders strongly recommended. April through November is optimal – winter snow blocks higher elevations. Bring recovery gear and extra water as this country gets brutally hot in summer. The history lesson in Nevada’s boom-and-bust mining legacy makes the technical challenge worthwhile.
