Clan Alpine Mountains Mining Road

Technical silver mine climb to Basin Range views

Difficult

This punishing 18-mile route climbs from the Dixie Valley floor through the heart of the Clan Alpine Mountains, past collapsing mine shafts and mill sites where silver ore was processed in the 1880s. The road switchbacks up loose talus slopes to reach 8,400-foot ridgelines, passing the remnants of the Wonder Mine and several other diggings that produced modest fortunes before playing out. Technical rock sections and off-camber turns demand attention, especially on the descent where brake fade becomes a real concern.

Difficult rating due to loose rock, steep grades, and narrow shelf roads with serious exposure. Modified 4WD with low range, good tires, and skid plates recommended. Summer months can be brutal at lower elevations—spring and fall offer the best conditions. No permits needed, but check fire restrictions. Dispersed camping available at several old mine sites, though water is nonexistent. The payoff is panoramic views across the Great Basin that stretch from the Sierra Nevada to the Ruby Mountains, reminding you why Nevada miners endured such hardships for a shot at striking it rich.
