BLM Sand Mountain Recreation Area Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

Sand Mountain is a 600-foot tall singing sand dune surrounded by scattered dispersed camping sites across several square miles of BLM land. The area gets heavy OHV traffic during weekends and holidays, with tent and RV camping scattered along dirt roads around the dune’s perimeter. Expect noise from ATVs and dirtbikes during peak times, but weekdays can be surprisingly quiet. No facilities whatsoever — pack it in, pack it out.

Access via Highway 50 about 84 miles east of Fallon, Nevada. Roads are sandy but passable for most vehicles during dry conditions. Avoid during wet weather when sand turns to sticky clay. Popular with the Burning Man crowd as a shakedown spot, so expect eclectic neighbors during late August.
