Ichthyosaur Fossil Shelter

World's largest known ichthyosaur fossils displayed in situ under protective shelter, showcasing Nevada's ancient marine past.

The fossil shelter houses the remains of several Shastasaurus, 60-foot marine reptiles that swam in Nevada’s ancient seas 225 million years ago. These ichthyosaur fossils, discovered in the 1920s, represent some of the largest marine reptiles ever found and are displayed exactly where they were unearthed. The climate-controlled shelter protects the fossils while allowing visitors to observe paleontologists’ ongoing work.

Located within Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, accessed via the same route as Berlin Ghost Town. The shelter operates on a guided tour schedule during peak season, with self-guided access available other times. Educational displays explain Nevada’s prehistoric marine environment and fossil formation process. The facility may close temporarily during winter weather.
