Forest Service Road 816A Rough Ridge Wilderness Loop

Granite ledges and creek crossings near Grandfather Mountain

Difficult

Forest Service Road 816A cuts through the wild side of Grandfather Mountain where few tourists venture, threading past moss-covered boulders and through hardwood hollows that feel like forgotten Appalachia. The route starts near the Blue Ridge Parkway and drops into technical terrain around Mile 3, where granite ledges and seasonal creek crossings at Boone Fork demand careful line choice and steady throttle control.

This is moderate-to-difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates — the rock gardens will punish stock vehicles. Best tackled April through October when creek levels are manageable, though spring brings muddy conditions that can close sections. No permits needed, but cell service vanishes after the first mile. You’ll earn spectacular ridge views and genuine solitude in one of North Carolina’s most rugged backcountry pockets.
