Forest Service Road 4568 Grandfather Mountain Backcountry Loop

Forest Service Road 4568 wraps around the wild backside of Grandfather Mountain, threading through dense rhododendron tunnels and over rocky creek beds that’ll test your breakover angle. The route connects several old logging roads dating back to the 1920s, passing the remnants of High Country Lumber Company’s highland operations. The real challenge comes at Boone Fork crossing, where granite boulders create a technical puzzle that demands precise wheel placement and solid underbody protection.

This is serious mountain territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. Best tackled late spring through early fall when the multiple water crossings aren’t swollen with snowmelt. No permits needed, but fuel up in Boone before heading out — nearest gas is 30+ miles away. Dispersed camping is allowed along the route, offering spectacular sunrise views over the Blue Ridge escarpment that remind you why these mountains earned their fearsome reputation.
