Oxnam Valley to Carter Bar — Cheviot Hills Border Ridge Road via Redesdale Forest
The border ridge where two countries blur.
Carter Bar at 1,371 feet is the highest point on the A68 where it crosses from England into Scotland — every overlander who’s been on this road knows the view north into Teviotdale feels like stepping into another world. The real track of interest runs west of the A68, threading through Redesdale Forest and the Oxnam Water valley on Ministry of Defence and Forestry Commission network roads that connect Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders with the wild Northumberland moorland below. Forest Service roads off the B6357 and unmaintained green lanes alongside the Kielder-Redesdale complex give you 20-plus miles of genuine solitude on gravel and rutted mud, flanking the border ridge with views into both countries simultaneously.
Difficulty is moderate — this is rolling moorland, not mountain terrain — but the surface can be deeply rutted clay in wet conditions and the forest roads are not maintained for civilian use. A high-clearance 4WD is appropriate; a stock SUV will manage in dry summer conditions but will struggle badly in autumn mud. Check access restrictions carefully: significant portions of Redesdale fall within the Otterburn Training Area and closure days are frequent and unpredictable. Fuel at Jedburgh or Otterburn before you commit. Best from May through October. Cell service is patchy on the ridge and drops to nothing in the deeper forest sections.
