Mennock Pass to Wanlockhead — Southern Uplands Lead Mining Road via Lowther Hills

Wanlockhead at 467m is the highest village in Scotland, and the Mennock Pass road from the A76 near Sanquhar is the most dramatic way to reach it. The C tarmac quickly deteriorates above the tree line into a single-track lane barely wider than a Land Cruiser, flanked by the Mennock Water and rising bare moorland on both sides. The real overland character comes when you continue past Wanlockhead on the Lowther Hill summit road to the Civil Aviation Authority radar station at 725m — a gated estate track that on a clear day gives unobstructed sightlines across five countries. The descent west into Elvanfoot along the Daer Reservoir forestry track completes a satisfying loop through some genuinely neglected Scottish hill country.

The Mennock Pass itself is passable in a capable car on dry days, but add the Lowther summit track and Daer Reservoir descent and you need proper high clearance and 4WD — the track surface above the radar dome turns to loose shale and eroded peat. Check gate access for the summit road with South Lanarkshire Council; it’s sometimes open to vehicles for estate purposes. Best May through October. Fuel in Sanquhar or Abington. The Lead Mining Museum in Wanlockhead is the best in Scotland and worth an hour of your time. Have a dirty day.
