Kielder Forest Drive — Kielder Village to Blakehopeburnhaugh via Border Ridge Track
England's biggest forest, one road through the heart of it.
Kielder Forest in Northumberland is the largest planted forest in England — 250 square miles of Sitka spruce, red squirrel habitat, and enough forestry roads to keep you busy for days. The official Kielder Forest Drive runs 12 miles of unsealed gravel from Kielder village through to Blakehopeburnhaugh, tracing high ground close to the Scottish border and offering elevated views across the reservoir and into the Cheviot Hills. Timber extraction traffic uses this road seasonally, so the surface ranges from freshly graded gravel to deeply rutted mud depending on when you show up. Lewis Burn and Deadwater Fell are key landmarks mid-route; the latter sits almost exactly on the England-Scotland border line at around 1,600 feet.
The Forest Drive is manageable in a capable 2WD in dry summer conditions but becomes genuine high-clearance territory after prolonged rain when loaded timber lorries have been through. A 4WD with decent ground clearance covers it confidently year-round. Forestry England charges a small toll to use the drive between April and October — pay at the Kielder Castle Visitor Centre. No dispersed camping on the drive itself, but Kielder Campsite operates nearby. Cell service disappears fast once you’re in the forest interior. Fuel up in Bellingham before heading north. This is quiet, underrated overland country in a region that doesn’t get nearly enough credit.
