Great Langdale Campsite — National Trust Lake District

Established Campground

Great Langdale Campsite is a proper National Trust–run site on the valley floor, backed by the dramatic silhouette of the Langdale Pikes. It’s the logical basecamp if you’re running Wrynose and Hardknott Passes — both roads are accessible within 15 minutes from the gate. The site has a mix of grass pitches for tents and tourers, a stone-walled barn with toilets and showers, and a campfire area in designated spots. Gets genuinely busy in summer — arrive midweek or book ahead. The pub at the Old Dungeon Ghyll is a short walk up the valley and should not be missed.

Access is via the B5343 from Ambleside — paved all the way, suitable for any vehicle towing a trailer. Campervan and caravan pitches are available but site can feel tight in peak season. Fires in designated areas only. Open year-round but winter pitching can be boggy. Book via the National Trust website — walk-ups are possible off-peak but not guaranteed.

Langdale Pikes at your door, passes in reach.
