Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway
Boone's path through granite gorges.
The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway traces old logging roads and hunting paths that wind through the rugged terrain between Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock. The route follows Boone Fork Creek through a narrow gorge where massive granite boulders force the trail into tight switchbacks and steep climbs. At Mile 8, you’ll cross the historic Boone Fork Bridge, a narrow timber structure that’s been tested by countless hunters and loggers over the decades.
This is a moderate technical route requiring high-clearance 4WD and skid plates for the rocky creek crossings. Summer thunderstorms turn the clay sections into slick nightmares, so spring and fall are your best windows. No permits needed, but fuel up in Boone — the nearest services are 25 miles from the trailhead. Dispersed camping is allowed along designated spurs, and the payoff is pure Blue Ridge solitude with views that stretch clear to Tennessee.
