Forest Service Road 46 – Mount Hood to Timothy Lake Loop

Forest Service Road 46 wraps around Mount Hood’s southern slopes like a dirt collar, threading between Timothy Lake and the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness through some of Oregon’s most pristine high country. The route starts near Government Camp and winds east through stands of Douglas fir and mountain hemlock, crossing numerous creek drainages before reaching the Timothy Lake area where camping spots overlook the glacial waters with Mount Hood’s south face dominating the skyline. The road passes several technical spurs including the steep descent to Clackamas Lake and multiple creek crossings that can run deep during snowmelt.

This is a moderate route requiring high-clearance 4WD for the rougher sections, though most of the mainline is passable by stock vehicles in dry conditions. Best tackled July through September when snow clears from the 4,000-foot elevations, though early season can mean muddy conditions and washouts. No permits required, but dispersed camping is abundant with established fire rings near the lakes. Carry extra fuel as the nearest services are back in Government Camp, and water is available from multiple creek crossings. You’ll earn some of Oregon’s best alpine scenery without the crowds of the main Mount Hood recreation areas.
