Mount Hood National Forest Backcountry Loop

Technical volcanic terrain around Oregon's crown

Difficult

This challenging route circles Mount Hood’s eastern flanks through dense old-growth forest and volcanic boulder fields. The trail starts near Government Camp and immediately drops into technical terrain where massive Douglas firs create natural obstacles between house-sized volcanic rocks. The gnarliest section hits at White River Crossing, where seasonal snowmelt creates a fast, rocky ford that’s claimed more than a few oil pans.

Difficult rating with expert-level sections requiring experienced drivers and well-built rigs. You’ll need serious ground clearance, skid plates, and recovery points — this isn’t mall-crawler country. Best attempted August through October when river levels drop and snow clears the higher forest roads. No permits required but check road closures. The reward is pure Pacific Northwest wilderness — towering trees, glacier-fed streams, and Mount Hood looming overhead like a sleeping giant.
