Deschutes River Canyon Technical Route
Technical drop into Oregon's steelhead canyon
The Bureau of Land Management road down Deschutes River Canyon near Maupin drops 1,200 feet in three miles through basalt ledges and loose scree that’ll test your rock-crawling skills and your nerves. This isn’t a Sunday drive — it’s a technical descent to one of Oregon’s legendary steelhead runs, where ancient petroglyphs mark fishing spots Native Americans used for thousands of years. The route ends at primitive boat launches where you can hear Class IV rapids echoing off canyon walls, with camping spots right on the water.
Expert-level difficulty requiring experienced drivers with recovery gear, skid plates, and aggressive tires. Stock vehicles will get body damage — bring a buddy and expect to use your winch. Best attempted April through June when water levels are up but weather is stable. No cell service, limited escape routes, and rough terrain that can strand the unprepared. But reach the bottom and you’ll have some of Oregon’s best fishing and most dramatic canyon scenery all to yourself.
