Mitchell — Spoke’n Hostel and Oregon Outback Resupply
Mitchell sits at the crossroads of the John Day Basin routes — Painted Hills to the west, Picture Gorge and the Sheep Rock Unit to the east, and the Ochoco high country behind you. The Spoke’n Hostel is a well-known stop among cyclists and overlanders alike: basic bunks, hot showers, a kitchen, and a small gear shop. The adjacent Tiger Town Brewing and a couple of basic stores cover food and cold beverages. It’s a small town — population under 200 — but punches above its weight as a resupply and debrief point after a long day on dirt.
Highway 26 is paved through town. Cell service is minimal — treat it like dead zone territory. Gas is available in Mitchell but verify hours; this is not a 24-hour pump situation. If you’re running the Painted Hills to Picture Gorge loop or the Buckhorn Drive circuit, Mitchell is your natural base camp town. Stock up, top off, and don’t assume anything will be open after 5pm.
Last real stop before the John Day backcountry.
