Painted Hills to Picture Gorge — John Day River Basin Backcountry Loop
Fossil beds, painted badlands, and empty Oregon rangeland.
The Painted Hills Unit of John Day Fossil Beds is already on the map — but most visitors photograph the hills from the paved overlook and leave. Drive south on Bear Creek Road, cut east across the open basin on Bridge Creek Road, and you’ll find yourself on a network of BLM two-tracks threading through sagebrush flats, rimrock breaks, and the eroded badlands above Picture Gorge near the Sheep Rock Unit. The geology out here is staggering — 30-million-year-old ash deposits painted in ochre, red, black, and gold. The route passes through Mitchell, Oregon (population under 200) and drops into the John Day River canyon via Highway 19 before looping back across the basin. Side roads off the main loop push into remote creek drainages where you won’t see another vehicle all day.
Most of this loop is manageable in a stock 4WD or capable high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions — the county and BLM roads are graded gravel with some rougher two-track spurs. Mud season in spring can close lower sections without warning. Best run is June through October. No permits required anywhere on the loop. Mitchell and Fossil are your fuel stops; both are small with limited hours so plan accordingly. Water is scarce — carry your own. Cell service is essentially nonexistent across the basin. Camp on BLM land throughout or use the Painted Hills dispersed area.
