Emi Koussi (3,445 m) sits at the southern end of the Tibesti Mountains in Chad’s Borkou region — the highest point in the Sahara and one of the least-visited places on the planet. The overland approach from Faya-Largeau through the Erg du Djourab and across Tibesti’s volcanic flanks is a true expedition-level undertaking. The terrain cycles through deep Saharan sand seas, volcanic rock fields, hardpan salt flats, and volcanic crater approaches. There are no marked roads past Faya — navigation is by GPS, compass, and local knowledge. Tuyé and Yoa volcanic features are key waypoints on the approach. This is a route with essentially zero margin for mechanical error.
This is Extreme-rated without debate. You need a minimum convoy of two fully-equipped expedition vehicles, satellite communication, months of logistics planning, and a current security assessment — the Tibesti region has historically been affected by armed conflict and the situation requires verification before any attempt. Permits from Chadian authorities are required and enforcement varies by region and year. Fuel is carried entirely from Faya or N’Djamena — there is none in the massif. Water must also be fully self-carried beyond Faya. Best months are November through February when temperatures are survivable. This route is for experienced desert expedition teams only, not recreational overlanders chasing the weekend run.

November through February is the only realistic window. Summer temps in the Tibesti regularly exceed 50°C (122°F) at lower elevations, and flash flooding during the brief wet season makes sand passages impassable. You need authorization from the Government of Chad's Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Housing, plus military escort coordination — this region borders Libya and has active security considerations. What's the hardest section and what actually makes it brutal?
The volcanic rock fields on the upper Emi Koussi flanks above 9,000 ft are the crux — sharp basalt shreds tires, gradients are severe, and there are no established lines. Below that, the deep Saharan sand passages between Faya-Largeau and the massif will bury unprepared vehicles repeatedly over hundreds of kilometers with zero external help available.
How much fuel range do you actually need, and where's the last resupply?
Faya-Largeau is your last reliable fuel point before committing to the route — after that, you're on your own for the full 430-mile push into the massif and back. Minimum 800–1,000 km of onboard fuel capacity per vehicle is the real-world requirement; carry more than you think you need because sand driving destroys fuel economy.
