Saline County Black Diamond Mine Historic Circuit
Coal country circuit through Illinois strip mine history.
The Black Diamond Mine Historic Circuit cuts through Saline County’s scarred landscape where coal extraction shaped both the terrain and the community for over a century. You’ll follow forgotten haul roads that once carried Peabody Coal Company’s massive trucks between strip pits, passing rusted dragline cables and concrete foundations from the industry’s heyday. The highlight is navigating around the flooded Muddy Creek strip pit, a quarter-mile-wide lake that dropped 180 feet when mining ceased in 1982.
This moderate route requires high-clearance 4WD to handle loose shale climbs and muddy bottom crossings after rain. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be brutal in the open cuts. No permits needed on this mix of county roads and old mining access tracks. You’ll find excellent dispersed camping spots overlooking the reclaimed prairie, plus a genuine education in how coal built and broke small-town Illinois.
