Painted Hills Unit — John Day Fossil Beds Trailhead and Viewpoint
The Painted Hills Unit is the most visually arresting stop in the John Day Basin — rolling mounds of red, gold, black, and tan clastone that shift color with cloud cover and moisture. Four signed trailheads branch off the main loop road: Painted Hills Overlook, Carroll Rim, Leaf Hill, and the Painted Cove boardwalk. Carroll Rim is the money shot — a 1.6-mile round trip to a ridge with a panoramic view of the entire unit. The parking areas handle rigs with trailers but fill fast on spring weekends.
Located off Highway 26 west of Mitchell, the access road is paved to the unit boundary, then well-graded gravel. Cell signal is spotty at best. No camping within the unit itself — nearest dispersed sites are east toward Mitchell or west toward Ochoco NF. Spring (April–May) for peak color when wet clay saturates the hues. Summer afternoons bake the place fast.
33-million-year-old painted hills, no hype needed.
