Going-to-the-Sun Road West Side Backcountry Loop

Glacier's backcountry without the tourist traffic.

Moderate

While tourists crawl up Going-to-the-Sun Road in rental cars, this rugged forest service network threads through the same territory via forgotten logging roads and mine access routes. The loop starts near Apgar and climbs through dense cedar and hemlock stands on increasingly technical terrain, with creek crossings and loose shale sections that’ll test your line choice. Key waypoint is the abandoned Belton Hills mining district where you’ll find rusted equipment scattered among towering trees.

Moderate to difficult depending on recent weather — spring runoff makes creek crossings sketchy, and fallen timber regularly blocks passages. Stock 4WD with good ground clearance handles it, but recovery gear’s smart for the boulder sections near Fish Creek. Best run July through September when roads are typically clear. No permits needed on forest service sections. What you get is Glacier’s backcountry without the crowds, plus some of the best dispersed camping spots in northwest Montana.
