Going-to-the-Sun Road Inner North Fork

Glacier's hidden technical bypass route

Difficult

The Inner North Fork variant branches from Going-to-the-Sun Road’s early miles, climbing through dense cedar forests toward Apgar Lookout before dropping into the hidden Camas Creek drainage. This lesser-known technical route requires navigating tight switchbacks carved into glacial till, with several exposed sections crossing avalanche chutes below towering peaks. The route rejoins the main road near Lake McDonald Lodge after 18 miles of challenging mountain driving through prime grizzly habitat.

Difficult route demanding high-clearance 4WD with excellent brakes and experienced mountain driving skills. Open only July through early October due to snow and seasonal wildlife closures. No camping permitted on this route, but dispersed sites available nearby. Carry bear spray, emergency communications, and be prepared for sudden weather changes above treeline. This forgotten alternate gives you Glacier’s backcountry beauty without the tourist crowds on the main road.
