Pisgah National Forest — Middle Fork Trail Corridor Dispersed Camp

Tucked into the hardwood hollows of Pisgah National Forest north of Waynesville, this dispersed corridor follows Forest Service roads off NC-209 and FR 96 along the Middle Fork of the Pigeon River drainage. Sites are informal, flat enough for a rooftop tent or ground setup, and shaded by tulip poplar, oak, and rhododendron thickets. The creek runs clear most of the year, good for rinsing gear but not unfiltered drinking. No crowds on weekdays — weekends in fall foliage season fill up fast.

Access is via gravel FS roads off NC-209 north of Waynesville — passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but slick red clay after rain makes 4WD welcome. No signage marks dispersed zones; stay 200 ft from water and 100 ft from the road per standard USFS rules. Fire restrictions in effect during dry summer periods — check with the Appalachian Ranger District before you light anything.
