Pisgah National Forest — Big Creek Road Upper Corridor Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Big Creek Road (FR 5000) cuts through a quiet corner of the Pisgah Ranger District between Waterville and the Black Mountains, giving overlanders running the Trans-America Trail a legitimate pull-off along one of the few low-traffic forest roads in this stretch. Sites are flat creek-bottom pads shaded by tulip poplar and hemlock, with Big Creek running audibly close. No facilities, no signage marking sites — you find your flat spot and settle in. Dispersed camping here is free and legal under standard USFS rules; 14-day stay limit applies.

Access FR 5000 off US-276 or from the I-40 Waterville exit area. The road starts passable by high-clearance 2WD but tightens up as you push further in — loaded overland rigs should run 4WD in wet conditions. Fire restrictions follow Pisgah NF seasonal postings; check with the Pisgah Ranger District before you light a match. Cell signal drops fast once you’re in the drainage.
