Ouachita National Forest Pine Ridge Trail
Deep forest roads through forgotten timber country
The Pine Ridge Trail cuts through some of the roughest country in the Ouachita National Forest, following old logging roads and mining tracks that date back to the 1920s timber boom. You’ll navigate rocky creek beds, ford the Little River multiple times, and pass the remains of Camp Caddo, where Depression-era loggers carved out a living in these remote hollows. The trail’s signature challenge is the Rocky Creek Ford, where spring snowmelt can turn a simple water crossing into a real test of your driving line.
This is legitimate backcountry territory requiring solid 4WD skills and recovery gear. Spring brings the highest water levels, while summer offers the most reliable creek crossings but brutal heat. Fall’s the sweet spot — clear water, cooler temps, and the hardwoods putting on a show. No permits needed, but fuel up in Talihina before heading in. You’ll earn some serious quiet out here, plus the kind of forest driving that reminds you why you bought that rig in the first place.
