Ouachita National Forest Horse Thief Springs Technical Loop

Technical mountain loop where outlaws once watered horses

Difficult

Horse Thief Springs earned its name from 19th-century outlaws who watered stolen livestock in its clear pools before disappearing into the Ouachita wilderness. This technical loop winds through some of the most remote terrain in southeastern Oklahoma, crossing Glover Creek multiple times and threading between granite outcrops that have claimed more than one rig’s oil pan. The old mining road to Crow Mountain offers panoramic views across the Arkansas border, while abandoned prospect holes remind you this country once buzzed with silver fever.

This is honest technical terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. Multiple creek crossings can turn treacherous after rain, and the granite shelf sections demand careful tire placement. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat makes the shaded creek crossings welcome. No permits required, but fuel up in Talihina — it’s 40 miles to the nearest gas station once you’re committed to the loop.
