Owyhee River Back Country Byway

Oregon's secret canyon country rivals Utah's red rocks

Moderate

The Owyhee River Back Country Byway penetrates 120 miles into Oregon’s most remote corner, where red rock canyons slice through high desert plateau country that rivals Utah for drama but sees a fraction of the visitors. Starting from Jordan Valley, this loop heads north through Leslie Gulch with its towering honeycomb rock formations, past Succor Creek’s fossil beds, and along the Owyhee River where thousand-foot canyon walls frame the wild and scenic waterway. The route includes spurs to Three Forks where three rivers converge in a spectacular gorge accessible only on foot or by raft.

High-clearance vehicles handle most sections, though some side canyons require 4WD for rocky creek beds and loose volcanic soil. The route stays open year-round but spring and fall offer the best weather — summer hits triple digits regularly. No permits needed, but this is true backcountry with no services for 100 miles. Carry extra water, food, and fuel, plus emergency communication. Dispersed camping throughout, with hot springs as bonus destinations. It’s Oregon’s best-kept secret for those seeking genuine solitude in canyon country.
