Atlas Mountains Tizi n’Tichka to Todra Gorge Circuit
High Atlas traverse through kasbahs to limestone canyons
This classic High Atlas circuit starts at the tourist-heavy Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m) but quickly breaks away onto rough pistes threading through Berber villages, kasbahs, and spectacular red rock country toward the towering walls of Todra Gorge. The route follows ancient caravan paths through the Dadès Valley, where centuries-old kasbahs cling to clifftops and palmeries create green ribbons through the arid landscape. The final approach to Todra Gorge narrows dramatically between 300-meter limestone walls that block out the sky, creating one of Morocco’s most photographed natural wonders.
Most of the route is manageable in a high-clearance 2WD, though some alternate pistes require 4WD when wet or sandy. Spring and autumn offer perfect conditions, while summer heat can be brutal in the lower valleys. Accommodation ranges from luxury kasbahs to basic guesthouses in Berber villages, and fuel is available in Ouarzazate and Tinghir. This is Morocco at its most cinematic — the backdrop for countless films and the gateway to understanding how traditional life persists in these ancient mountains.
