BLM Alvord Desert — West Shore Dispersed Camping
The west shore of the Alvord Desert is the staging ground for playa drives, land sailing, and big-sky camping that Oregon overlanders talk about for years. Pull off the gravel road that runs south from Fields toward Mann Lake and set up camp on the hardpan or just off the edge of it — there are no designated sites, just open BLM land and a horizon that goes forever. No trees, no shade, no water. Bring everything. The Steens Mountain escarpment rises nearly a vertical mile directly to the west — one of the most dramatic geological backdrops in the American West. Star gazing here is exceptional.
Road in from Fields Station is well-graded gravel passable by most rigs. After wet weather the playa itself becomes impassable — even high-clearance rigs have been swallowed in the soft clay. Do not drive onto the playa after rain. No facilities of any kind. Nearest fuel and food is Fields Station, roughly 20 miles north.
Sleep on the playa under the Steens escarpment.
