Steens Mountain Loop Road
Oregon's highest and wildest mountain loop
The Steens Mountain Loop climbs from sagebrush flats at 4,000 feet to the rim of Oregon’s highest fault-block mountain at 9,700 feet, offering views that stretch from the Alvord Desert to the Cascade Range. This remote 66-mile loop takes you through some of the most untouched country in Oregon, past Kiger Gorge’s dramatic U-shaped canyon carved by ancient glaciers, and along ridgelines where wild horses still roam free. The road becomes progressively rougher as you climb, with loose rocks and steep grades testing both vehicle and driver.
Moderate difficulty with sections requiring high clearance and careful line selection, especially on the upper reaches where weather can change rapidly. Best tackled June through October when snow clears from the summit—carry extra fuel, water, and warm gear as services are 60+ miles away. The payoff is some of Oregon’s most spectacular backcountry camping with zero light pollution and endless stars. This isn’t just a drive; it’s a pilgrimage to Oregon’s wild heart.
