Alvord Desert Playa to Fields Station — Steens Mountain East Escarpment Base

A mile-high fault wall and an alkali desert floor.

Easy

The Alvord Desert is a 100-square-mile alkali playa in the Oregon Outback that sees less annual rainfall than parts of the Sahara. You get to it by driving southeast out of Burns on Highway 78, cutting south on the Steens Mountain back road, and rolling onto the playa floor where the cracked white surface stretches to the horizon with Steens Mountain’s 9,700-foot east escarpment — a fault scarp that drops nearly a full vertical mile — towering directly above you. Alvord Hot Springs sits on the playa edge: a pair of concrete tubs fed by 170°F geothermal water, wide open and free. The route continues south along the playa edge through Fields, population 9, where the general store sells milkshakes that are genuinely legendary on this circuit.

In dry conditions, the playa surface is firm enough for two-wheel drive and is dead flat. The surrounding access roads are high desert gravel and dirt two-track — manageable for any AWD or 4WD rig with decent clearance. Do not drive onto the playa after rain; the alkali clay turns to axle-sucking paste in minutes and it dries slower than you’d think. Summer is hot but passable; spring and fall are ideal. No cell service from Burns south. Water and fuel in Burns before departure — Fields has limited supplies but no fuel guarantee. Dispersed camping on BLM land along the escarpment base.
