Blue Ridge Parkway Forest Road 480
Blue Ridge technical connector with multiple creek crossings
Forest Road 480 drops off the manicured Blue Ridge Parkway into real Virginia mountain country, where the pavement ends and the George Washington National Forest begins in earnest. This technical connector road winds through dense hardwood forest, crossing Jenkins Creek multiple times before climbing toward Bald Mountain Ridge. The route features rocky stream beds, tight switchbacks, and seasonal washouts that can trap unwary drivers between granite boulders and creek banks.
Moderate to difficult terrain requires high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery points — the creek crossings alone will test your departure angles and waterproofing. Best tackled April through October when water levels are manageable, though spring runoff can make crossings impassable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Waynesboro and carry water. Multiple dispersed camping spots along the ridge offer solitude and stellar valley views that make the technical approach worthwhile.
