George Washington National Forest Ramsey Draft Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Several primitive camping spots exist along Forest Road 95 before reaching the Ramsey’s Draft Wilderness boundary. Sites are small, typically accommodating 1-2 vehicles maximum, tucked among mature hardwoods with seasonal creek access. The area serves as a staging point for backpackers heading into the 6,518-acre wilderness. Expect complete solitude except during peak fall colors when leaf-peepers arrive.

The final mile to the trailhead becomes increasingly rough, requiring high-clearance vehicles. Road can be impassable during winter months or after heavy rains. No facilities – primitive camping only. Cell service is nonexistent. Popular with serious hikers seeking access to Virginia’s most pristine old-growth hemlock forest.
