George Washington National Forest Forest Road 274
Technical ridge runner with three-state views
Forest Road 274 climbs the spine of Shenandoah Mountain from Staunton River valley to Wolf Gap, threading rocky ledges and loose shale switchbacks for 28 miles of pure Appalachian backbone. The route starts easy on graded gravel but turns technical after mile 12, where rock gardens and off-camber sections demand careful line choice. The payoff comes at Flagpole Knob, where you can see three states from your driver’s seat.
This difficult trail requires aggressive tread tires, skid plates, and experience reading loose rock. Spring washouts and winter ice make summer through early fall the smart window. No services exist for the entire route — pack extra fuel, tools, and water for high ridge camping. Cell service disappears after the first valley, making this genuine backcountry. The reward: classic Virginia mountain views and the satisfaction of running one of the state’s most respected technical challenges.
