BLM Steens Mountain Blitzen River Dispersed Area
Scattered camping spots along the Donner und Blitzen River on the eastern approach to Steens Mountain, elevation around 4,000 feet. Sites are primitive with established fire rings and decent spacing for privacy. The river provides a reliable water source (filter required) and the dramatic western face of Steens Mountain dominates the skyline. Popular with hunters in fall and stargazers year-round due to minimal light pollution.
Access via Steens Mountain Loop Road (gravel) is suitable for most vehicles in dry conditions but can become impassable when wet. Snow closes the higher elevations from November through May, but this lower section often remains accessible. Cattle grazing occurs seasonally. Pack out all trash and respect the Leave No Trace principles.
