Owyhee River Breaks Road — Succor Creek to Three Forks Hot Springs via Leslie Gulch

Oregon's canyon badlands, hot springs earned.

Difficult

Leslie Gulch alone is worth the drive from Portland, but most people who make it this far don’t push on to Three Forks — and that’s exactly why Three Forks stays wild. The route drops out of Succor Creek State Natural Area through towering rhyolite and tuff formations that look more like southeastern Utah than anything you’d expect in Oregon. The track follows the Owyhee River Breaks south through increasingly rough canyon terrain, crossing the Owyhee River at the Three Forks confluence where the North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork all come together beside a series of geothermal hot springs pools. The final miles into Three Forks are rough, rocky, and subject to sudden flash flooding from the canyon walls above.

This is genuine remote desert overlanding — the kind of run where a breakdown means a long wait. High-clearance 4WD is required; the canyon floor crossings can have enough flow in spring to challenge a stock rig’s approach angle. Run it April through June for water and wildflowers, or September and October for cooler temps. No permits. Fuel in Jordan Valley, Oregon, before you start — there’s nothing out here. Cell service is nonexistent. Carry at minimum two gallons of water per person per day. Three Forks has dispersed camping and a hot soak waiting if you earn it.
