Owyhee Uplands Backcountry — Jordan Valley to Rome via Three Forks of the Owyhee

Oregon's emptiest canyon — go prepared or don't go.

Difficult

The Owyhee River country in southeast Oregon is the kind of place that makes you check your fuel twice and tell someone where you’re going. The route from Jordan Valley south and east to the Three Forks confluence — where the North, Middle, and South Forks of the Owyhee meet in a remote canyon — then west along the canyon rim to the Rome take-out on US-95, covers some of the most starkly beautiful high desert in the American West. Deep rhyolite canyons, hot springs, bald sage uplands, golden eagles on every fence post. The Two-Color Campground and the canyon overlooks above Three Forks are the payoff miles — no guardrails, no crowds, just vertical walls dropping 400 feet to green water.

This route requires a legitimate high-clearance 4WD — the road to Three Forks gets rough and sandy, and after rain the clay sections turn to grease. Snatch strap, recovery boards, and a full-size spare are non-negotiable out here. Best season is late April through June and again in September; summer heat and flash flood risk in the canyons make July and August sketchy. No permit required. The nearest fuel is Jordan Valley or Fields — check both; neither is a guaranteed open sign. BLM-managed; dispersed camping is permitted. Cell service is essentially zero from Jordan Valley south.
