Starting from the red-rock switchbacks of Dades Gorge, this route winds through the Valley of Roses and past crumbling kasbahs toward the edge of the Sahara. You’ll navigate the technical descent into Todra Gorge where 300-meter canyon walls squeeze to just 10 meters apart, then cross the Hamada du Guir—a moonscape of black stone and scattered fossils. The final approach to Merzouga takes you across smaller erg systems before the massive orange walls of Erg Chebbi rise 150 meters from the desert floor like frozen tsunamis of sand.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicle and recovery gear for sand sections. The rocky hamada sections will punish tires and suspension on stock vehicles. October to March offers perfect temperatures, while summer heat exceeds 50°C. Fuel up in Erfoud—last reliable station before 200km of desert. Water caching recommended at Rissani. Yes — a stock high-clearance 4WD handles this circuit fine. Soft sand sections near Merzouga are where low-range and aired-down tires matter most; a bone-stock lifted wagon with A/T tires is the realistic minimum.
What months should I avoid and why?
June through August is brutal — daytime temps regularly hit 45°C (113°F) in the Sahara sections and push past 50°C on dark rock. October through March is the window; spring flash floods can also close the Dades Gorge road without warning.
Do I need permits or pay fees to drive this route?
No trail-specific permits are required. You'll need a valid passport and vehicle registration at any police checkpoints — these are routine and common throughout the region. Foreign-plated vehicles must carry standard Moroccan insurance (available at the border or in Ouarzazate).
What's the hardest section and what actually makes it hard?
The loose sand corridors approaching Erg Chebbi are where most rigs get stuck — it's not technical rock crawling, it's sustained soft sand that punishes wrong tire pressure and momentum mistakes. Airing down to 18-20 PSI and committing to lines matters more than power here.
How far is the nearest fuel stop and can I make the full 300km on one tank?
Fuel is available in Boumalne Dadès at the start and in Erfoud and Merzouga near the end — the middle stretch is thin, with Tinghir being your only reliable mid-route option. A standard 70-80L tank is workable, but carry a 20L jerry can if your rig drinks more than 12L/100km off-road.
