Atoka County Iron Mountain Mining Circuit
Iron ore mining roads through forgotten Ouachita quarries
The rusted hulks of mining equipment still mark the quarry entrances along these forgotten mining roads that honeycomb the Atoka County hills south of Antlers. Built in the 1920s to haul iron ore from the Ouachita Mountains to the railroad, these overgrown tracks wind through dense oak and pine forest to reach half a dozen abandoned quarry sites. The most challenging section requires a technical descent into Muddy Boggy Creek valley, where the old mining bridge was washed out decades ago and you’ll ford the creek at a rocky shoal marked by rusted cable remnants.
This is moderate 4WD territory requiring high clearance and low-range gearing for the steep mining cuts and creek crossing. The roads are passable most of the year but avoid during spring floods when Muddy Boggy runs high. No permits needed for the state forest sections, but respect private property markers near the old company town sites. Pack water and fuel for the 30-mile circuit — you’re truly off the grid here. The reward is genuine solitude and a glimpse into Oklahoma’s forgotten industrial past, with excellent primitive camping near the abandoned Coalgate-to-Antlers railroad grade.
