Sandstone Hills McAlester to Robbers Cave Technical Circuit
Outlaw hideouts and coal mining ruins in the Ouachitas
The Sandstone Hills McAlester to Robbers Cave Technical Circuit follows old coal haul roads through the Ouachita Mountains’ western slopes, where Pennsylvanian-age sandstone creates natural fortresses that once sheltered Jesse James and Belle Starr. The route navigates 15 miles of technical terrain from abandoned McAlester mine sites through Sugar Loaf Mountain’s boulder fields, crossing Fourche Maline Creek multiple times before reaching the legendary cave formations where outlaws cached stolen goods in natural sandstone vaults.
Moderate technical difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD with good approach angles for the creek crossings and rock ledges. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when creek levels are manageable and temperatures stay reasonable. No permits needed for most of the route, though Robbers Cave State Park charges day-use fees. This circuit delivers Oklahoma history you can touch — from coal tipple ruins to outlaw hideouts — plus excellent dispersed camping opportunities in the San Bois Mountains where stone formations create natural windbreaks.
