Cross Timbers State Park Equestrian Trail

Cross Timbers clay and creek challenges

Moderate

The Cross Timbers State Park Equestrian Trail cuts through some of eastern Oklahoma’s most distinctive terrain, where ancient oak motts and prairie grassland create the ecological boundary that once defined the edge of the Great Plains. The main loop follows old ranch roads and cattle trails around Toronto Lake, with the technical challenge coming from creek crossings along Lick Creek and the steep clay climbs up Sand Hill Ridge that turn greasy after rain.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles, with the sandy washes and clay slopes demanding good tires and momentum management. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when the clay isn’t soup and the creeks aren’t flash-flooding. No permits required, but the park charges day-use fees. Dispersed camping isn’t allowed within park boundaries, but nearby Robbers Cave State Park offers backcountry sites. This route delivers classic Cross Timbers scenery and a taste of the ecosystem that shaped Oklahoma’s settlement patterns.
