Robbers Cave Cross Timbers Trail

Outlaw caves and technical sandstone crawling

Difficult

The Cross Timbers Trail winds 12 miles through the rugged sandstone country around Robbers Cave State Park, following old bootlegger routes and cattle trails that once hid Jesse James and his gang. The technical sections climb through narrow rock ledges and drop into creek bottoms lined with massive boulders, with the infamous cave system serving as a dramatic backdrop. Key obstacles include the Widow Maker ledge at mile 7 and a series of off-camber boulder crawls that have claimed more than one oil pan.

This is difficult terrain requiring modified 4WD with rock sliders and underbody protection — stock trucks will struggle on the technical rock sections. Best attempted during dry periods from May through September when creek levels are manageable. No permits required, but check with park rangers about seasonal closures. Primitive camping is available in designated areas, and you’ll need to be self-sufficient for fuel and supplies. It’s the kind of challenging terrain that builds skills and tests equipment while exploring genuine outlaw history.
