Eufaula Lake Corps of Engineers Backcountry Trail
Corps roads through Oklahoma's largest lake
The Corps of Engineers maintains over 60 miles of service roads threading through the timber and along the 600-mile shoreline of Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma’s largest lake. These forgotten maintenance routes punch deep into the Ouachita foothills, connecting remote coves, wildlife management areas, and abandoned homesteads from the 1960s lake construction. The Longtown Creek section offers the most technical driving, with creek crossings and steep clay climbs that’ll test traction when wet.
Moderate difficulty overall, though spring rains turn the clay sections into slip-and-slides that’ll strand anything without 4WD and aggressive tread. The Corps keeps most roads passable for their trucks, but expect washouts, fallen trees, and seasonal closures. No permits needed, but respect gate closures during hunting seasons and nesting periods. Best driven in late summer when water levels drop and roads firm up. Dispersed camping allowed in designated areas — check current regulations before setting up camp along these remote shoreline access points.
