Pollock Mountain Fire Lookout Road
Idaho's highest staffed fire lookout road
The switchback climb to Pollock Mountain’s 8,920-foot summit puts you at Idaho’s highest staffed fire lookout, where the entire Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness sprawls below. This Forest Service road starts as easy gravel from Dixie then turns brutal in the final three miles — loose rock, steep grades up to 18%, and exposed ledges where one mistake puts you sliding into the Salmon River drainage 3,000 feet down. The lookout tower, built in 1934, still operates during fire season with rangers who’ve seen every type of rig attempt this climb.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring high-clearance 4WD with low range and good tires. The road gets sketchy after snowmelt in June and closes with first snow in October. No services for 50 miles, so carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear. Cell service is nonexistent until you reach the summit. What you get is the best wilderness panorama in central Idaho and camping at dispersed spots near Dixie Lookout, plus bragging rights for completing one of the state’s gnarliest lookout roads.
