Caney Creek Red River Access Trail

This challenging route follows an old timber company road down Caney Creek to its confluence with the Red River, crossing the creek multiple times through deep sand and mud holes. You’ll navigate between massive cypress and cottonwood trees in true river bottom country, with the creek crossings getting progressively deeper as you approach the Red River. Local fishermen have used this route for decades to reach trophy catfish holes that can only be accessed by 4WD vehicles willing to tackle the soft sand and seasonal flooding.

Difficult trail requiring experienced drivers with lockers or at minimum aggressive tread tires and recovery gear. The sand can swallow stock vehicles quickly, and spring floods make this route impassable for months. Summer and fall offer the best conditions when creek levels drop, but even then expect to air down and possibly winch through soft spots. No facilities, no cell service, and you’re on your own for extraction. The payoff is camping on Red River sandbars under massive cottonwoods in country that looks more like Louisiana than Oklahoma.
