Broken Bow Lake Remote Timber Circuit

Timber roads to forgotten lake country

Moderate

The unmarked Forest Service roads that snake through McCurtain County’s pine timber around Broken Bow Lake take you into country most folks never see. You’ll cross Glover Creek on a crumbling concrete ford that dates to the Civilian Conservation Corps, then climb through second-growth shortleaf pine stands where loggers still work. The real challenge comes at Mile 12 where Forest Road 259B drops into a narrow creek bottom — if recent rains have hit, you’re looking at axle-deep mud for a quarter mile.

This is moderate 4WD country that’ll test your low-range skills and mud tires. Stock clearance works dry, but bring a winch and recovery gear for the creek crossings. Best tackled April through October when the timber roads aren’t completely soup. No permits needed, but you’re sharing these roads with loaded logging trucks during weekdays. What you get is solitude, legitimate backcountry camping along the lake arms, and a real taste of southeastern Oklahoma’s working forest country.
