Sawmill Road to Lonesome Valley — Prescott National Forest Bradshaw Mountains High Circuit via Crown King Approach

Arizona's forgotten granite high country.

Moderate

The Bradshaw Mountains between Crown King and Walker sit in a forgotten middle ground of Arizona overlanding — too low for the alpine crowd, too rough for casual tourists, and just remote enough that you’ll rarely see another rig. Forest Road 52 and its connecting spurs off Goodwin Mesa wind through ponderosa pine and chaparral above Lonesome Valley, linking old mining claims, granite outcrops, and the occasional cattle tank. The shelf road sections off the main Bradshaw ridge are the crux — narrow, loose decomposed granite with cambered outboard pitches and no room to pass. Walker and Mayer are both accessible from different ends of the circuit, making a proper loop possible.

Stock 4WD with decent clearance runs this fine in dry conditions, but the decomposed granite turns to greasy red slop after monsoon rain — respect the season. The monsoon window runs July through September and afternoon storms are guaranteed; plan your timing accordingly. No permits required, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the Prescott National Forest with standard rules. Prescott is your resupply point — 35 miles of gravel separates you from anything once you’re in the Bradshaws. This is a legitimate half-day to full-day circuit with enough variety to hold your attention for the whole run.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or do I need a lift?

A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner is the stated minimum and will get through. The granite slab sections and loose rock climbs reward a bit of extra clearance, so a 2-3 inch lift helps, but isn't required if you pick your lines carefully.

When is this trail passable — can I run it in summer or after monsoons?

Best window is October through June. Summer monsoon season (July–September) turns dirt sections slick, raises flash flood risk on low crossings, and afternoon storms above 6,000 feet can be violent. Avoid it wet unless you know what you're walking into.

Do I need a permit or pay any fees to run this route?

No permit required and no day-use fee for this route through Prescott National Forest. Dispersed camping is free; stay within designated open areas shown on the Prescott NF Motor Vehicle Use Map and follow 14-day limits.

What's the hardest section and what makes it gnarly?

The granite slab climbs near the upper circuit are the crux — smooth rock with limited traction points means tire placement matters more than horsepower. It's not a winch-out situation for a capable rig, but a loaded vehicle on worn all-terrains will feel it.

How far is the nearest gas from the trailhead, and is there water on route?

Crown King has a small general store but don't count on reliable fuel there — top off in Prescott before you head out, roughly 35–40 miles from the start. There's no reliable potable water on the trail, so carry all you need for the full 42-mile run plus camp.
