Taseko River FSR to Tatlayoko Lake Divide
Grizzly country and river crossings, no mercy.
The Taseko River FSR is one of those routes that earns its reputation the hard way. Starting off Highway 20 west of Williams Lake, the road follows the Taseko River south into the Chilcotin’s open plateau country before climbing toward the divide overlooking Tatlayoko Lake. The river crossings — particularly at lower Taseko and a unnamed tributary around the 40 km mark — are the gatekeepers here. Spring runoff turns them into genuine hazards; by mid-July they’re manageable but still tire-deep. Wildlife pressure is constant: grizzlies work the river bars, and moose stand in the willows like they own the place.
This is not a route for street-based SUVs. You need a lifted 4×4 with lockers, good river-crossing ground clearance, and a recovery kit. Cell service drops at the highway turnoff and doesn’t come back. Carry at least two days of fuel from Williams Lake — there’s nothing out here. Best window is mid-July through September before the fall rains soften the clay sections into axle-deep mud. Dispersed camping along the river bars is exceptional. A winch is strongly recommended. Satellite communicator is non-negotiable.
