Ruta Nacional 3 Patagonia Wind Gap Challenge
Patagonian wind torture on the road to nowhere
The stretch of Ruta Nacional 3 between Río Gallegos and the Chilean border at San Sebastián delivers everything Patagonia promises to throw at you — sideways. This 247-kilometer section cuts straight through the heart of Santa Cruz province’s windswept steppes, where gusts regularly hit 120 km/h and can flip a poorly loaded truck. You’ll pass the abandoned Estancia La Anita, site of the 1921 Patagonian rebellion, and cross the Río Gallegos where Charles Darwin himself collected fossils in 1833.
This is moderate difficulty only because of weather — the road itself is paved, but Patagonian conditions demand respect. High-clearance vehicles handle better in crosswinds, and you’ll want full fuel tanks since services are 200+ kilometers apart. Best tackled March through November when winds calm slightly. What you get is pure Patagonian immersion: endless sky, guanaco herds, and the kind of solitude that reminds you why overlanders chase the ends of the earth.
