Cumberland Gap Historic Wagon Road
Daniel Boone's gateway through the Cumberland Mountains
The Cumberland Gap Historic Wagon Road traces the original pioneer route that carried over 200,000 settlers westward through the Appalachian Mountains. This network of historic traces and Civil War-era military roads winds through Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, passing the Hensley Settlement ruins and climbing to Pinnacle Overlook via the old CCC roads built in the 1930s. The route follows portions of the original Wilderness Road blazed by Daniel Boone, with challenging climbs through Fern Lake Gap and technical descents past the Civil War fortifications.
This moderate to difficult trail requires high-clearance 4WD for the steeper sections, especially the approach to Pinnacle Overlook and the backside descent toward Cumberland Falls. Best tackled April through October when weather permits safe passage. The 18-mile main route can be done as a day trip, but dispersed camping is available at designated sites. You’ll experience genuine Appalachian history while testing your vehicle’s capabilities on grades that challenged wagons for over 200 years.
