Powell Mountain Road cuts a rough line across the spine of Lee County’s highest ridge, weaving through abandoned coal camps and offering sweeping views into Kentucky’s Pine Mountain. The 18-mile route follows an old mining road that once hauled coal from strip mines, leaving behind deep cuts in the limestone and scattered remnants of camps like Hagan and Olinger. Midway through, the trail passes the ruins of Hagan Tipple, where rusted conveyor systems still snake down the mountainside.
This is a moderate-to-difficult run requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates—loose shale and exposed limestone ledges will test your vehicle’s armor. Best tackled April through October when washouts are manageable. No permits needed, but bring extra fuel as the nearest gas is 30 miles away in Pennington Gap. Dispersed camping is available along several ridge spurs. You’ll earn stunning views across three states and a taste of Appalachian coal heritage most folks never see.
